If attainment across a broader range of subjects are be counted, then arts subjects and
vocational qualifications count for something in school accountability as well.

As part of a wide - ranging review into
vocational education, the engineering
qualification developed by JCB, Rolls Royce, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the University of Cambridge, will in future
count as only one GCSE rather than five as is the case now in school performance league tables.
The units do coinside with other BTEC
qualifications, however, we use it here as a basic introduction to the kitchen, we deliver it to KS3 and Year 10 and often use the units of work to
count towards their Pearson BTEC Level 1 Award in
Vocational Studies (QCF).

count in school performance tables alongside the new GCSEs,
vocational qualifications have also been required to adopt more «academic» types of learning and assessment.
Our most recent research using the 2014 GCSE results (which excluded many
vocational qualifications from
counting towards school performance, and reduced the contribution to the total point score of those
qualifications included) suggests the improvement was because of disproportionate use of GCSE equivalent
qualifications in sponsored academies compared to similar maintained schools.
