The controversy did provoke studies by geologists who would eventually show that the other great extinctions of the past, some even worse than the doom of the dinosaurs, had been caused by massive injections of greenhouse gases from
volcanic outbursts — an all too relevant demonstration of the power of the gases.
If there aren't enough mights woulds and coulds yet, an ice age buildup could cause massive
volcanic outbursts which might then end the ice age.
Note that emissions from the large
volcanic outbursts on Aug. 15 at Rarog and Heno Paterae have substantially faded by Aug. 29.
Spotted by NASA's Messenger spacecraft, the formations were created early in the planet's history, when
volcanic outbursts flooded impact craters.
The material, they believe, was recycled as older volcanic rocks forming the roofs of magma chambers collapsed and remelted during eruptions, only to be reejected in the next
volcanic outburst.
The after - effects of
this volcanic outburst are still being felt today, as earthquakes like the 5.8 magnitude quake centered near Mineral, Va. in 2011 still rumble through the faults weakened by the volcanoes.
Not exact matches
And yes, there is such evidence — in the predicted response to
volcanic forcing, the ozone hole, orbital variations, the sun, paleo - lake
outbursts, the response to ENSO etc. that all show models matching the observations skillfully (which is not to say they match perfectly).
Of course I am assuming that if there is increased activity on land volcanoes there is also with the majority of them, which are submerged undersea
volcanic activity is a constant unlike on land's explosive
outbursts.
