I always thought it would have been a much better approach if he had tried to ease the high
volume training bodybuilders down a few sets at a time rather than suggest that they go cold turkey from their existing training protocol right down to one or two hard work sets of the heavy duty concept.
Not exact matches
To increase their muscle mass and definition,
bodybuilders tend to do high
volume work and isolation
training for the smaller muscles.
That's why
bodybuilders put so much effort into planning their routines in terms of factors such as
training splits, intensity and
volume, and there's no going around the fact that continuous progress can only be achieved through a very intelligently organized
training approach.
Don't compare yourself with drug - enhanced athletes or
bodybuilders with amazing genetics — these people can make exceptional gains by
training more often and with a greater
volume.
Research done on the average American daily protein
volume required is now set at only 50 grams,
Bodybuilders know very well that if any weight
training done in the gym or at home is going to be of any benefit, then daily protein intake needs to be increased.
The reality is the reason most
bodybuilders train one body part a day is because it allows them to
train with more
volume without overtraining plus keep in mind for the exeption of legs there is some form of overlap for all upper body part which teanslates into indirect stimulation and therefore a week of rest before being hit again seem appropriate.

volume routines that
bodybuilders used 40 or 50 years ago.

bodybuilders who believes in
volume training, serious
volume.
That's particularly applicable to the
bodybuilder whose high -
volume workouts may impair immune function in the hours following
training.
A lot of professional
bodybuilders perform
volume training, but when you have anabolic steroids doing a large portion of the work for you outside of the gym, practically the slightest form of stimulation will work.

Other than that, intermediate and advanced
bodybuilders should only borrow the super slow lifting portion of the
training protocol (not the low
volume 1 set approach) if they are recovering from injury or in a situation where they have limited access to heavy weights.
Mike Mentzer and Arnold
trained on opposite ends of the spectrum, so did Dorian and Lee Haney, and you can find high
volume and low
volume proponents among successful natural
bodybuilders as well.
Back in the 70's high
volume, twice a day
training was popular amongst the top level professional
bodybuilders.
