With Senate Dems increasingly likely to
introduce and even
vote on a bill imposing new sanctions
on Iran, the White House is escalating its behind the scenes pressure
on them to hold off, warning them that in moving such a
measure, they are making war with Iran more likely.
But the
measure was opposed by Liberal Democrats, who secured the freedom under the Coalition Agreement to abstain in any
vote on the issue, and Mr Clarke indicated today in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that tough economic conditions made it unlikely to be
introduced before 2015.
Other bills that were
introduced, but not
voted on, included
measures to create new penalties for those who fail to report construction fatalities, a requirement for construction companies to give the city detailed reports about scheduled construction activities months in advance, and a mandate for drug and alcohol testing of construction workers at certain job sites.
The committee made no changes to a nutrition bill that Mr. Lugar
introduced June 9, and swiftly approved the
measure on an 11 - to - 7
vote.
Of particular importance
on the legislative agenda this year, is Senate Constitutional Amendment 3 (SCA 3)
introduced by Senator Mark Leno, which would lower the
vote threshold for local school district parcel tax
measures from 2/3 to 55 percent.
The bills (HR 3989 [PDF] and HR 3990 [PDF]-RRB-
introduced by House Education Chairman John Kline (R - MN), passed
on a strictly party - line
vote with Democrats voicing their extreme opposition to the
measures.
To break the impasse, the original bill (S - 877), which was
introduced on January 9, was later split into the three
measures on which lawmakers are poised to
vote today.
