In upholding the prohibition
against artificial methods of
birth control, the encyclical dashed the hopes of many believers for a change in church teaching — hopes that had been raised when the National Catholic Reporter leaked the news that the lay and clerical members of the hand - picked papal commission studying the matter had
voted decisively to support the limited use of artificial contraception within the context of marriage.
When I claim that label, I'm connecting not only with a number of active feminists who are working today to help women, but with an ongoing history of feminists who got women the
vote, who made
birth control happen, who got women into positions of power in the government, who worked to rectify racial inequality and fight
against things like mandatory sterilization of welfare recipients.
If I'm understanding you correctly then the repubs would do better if they allowed
birth control and went
against the church in regards to providing contraceptives because that would reduce the # of abortions thereby giving the republicans a bigger
voting base.
