By playtime the
canvas of whole school contributions was complete and could be seen by pupils as they
walked out to play.

out of RISD, the 31 - year - old painter Ted Gahl performs a captivating tightrope -
walk between abstraction and figuration, creating
canvases that seem to harness stylistic elements
of artists as diverse as de Kooning, Diebenkorn, El Greco, and Matisse.
But
walking through this retrospective, I was entirely convinced by these familiar works with their sequinned outlines
of figures and bead - effect dots marking
out subjects, densely patterned designs on
canvases supported by shiny round elephant turds.
These elements in the drawings offer clues on how to read the painting, which also bears the words «in» to the left and «
out» to the right, inviting the viewer to
walk along the
canvas from left to right and perceive it over time, as one would a piece
of music.
(2) The painter enjoyed long
walks on the dunes and daily swims in the often - choppy waters
of the bay and it is hard to imagine the motions
of these events not playing
out in the surface
of his
canvases.
