Rethinking the
materials economy — Our current «throwaway economy» is not only disrupting our environment, it is also
wasting valuable energy and resources.
There is increasing awareness of the opportunities to reprocess power station
waste into
valuable materials for use primarily in the construction and civil engineering industry (see coal combustion products).
This project must reduce environmental burdens from the extraction, processing, and disposal of
materials and turn
waste into a
valuable resource through beneficial reuse.
However, the country sticks to a simple plan: avoid
waste as much as possible, recover
valuable raw
materials from
waste, generate green energy from
waste when possible and only discard the
waste that is left over.
The first is when the
material is inherently
valuable, but falls outside the
waste management infrastructure.
If the covered lagoon method (pictured) proves to be globally
valuable for business, the upshot is a large scale incentive to prevent lagoon flooding or leakage, and the resulting loss of raw
material (the poop) needed profit from a
waste that, if not carefully retained to extract economic value, offends neighbors, is a potential disease vector (for Avian flu for example) and poses an ecological hazard to downstream waters.
These «biorefineries» will convert widely available, inexpensive, organic
materials such as agricultural residues, high - content biomass crops, wood residues, and cellulose in municipal solid
wastes into
