The lineup for this year's Cannes Film Festival (or as they call it in France, Festival de Cannes) has been announced and it is robust with Oscar bait, highly - anticipated premieres, star - studded features, and a lot of foreign and
obscure films that if
watched, will make you feel cinematically superior to everyone else.
However, I always had the desire to learn more about these
obscure films I would
watch, and this led me to reading movie reviews, and
watching Ebert & Roeper's «At the Movies» religiously.
Two separate commentary tracks, the first and best with director Ben Wheatley and co-writer Amy Jump and the second with actors Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, and Michael Smiley, bring some of the
film's more
obscure passages into better focus, while a slew of formal interviews with the filmmakers, actors, and producers help illuminate the extent of the work that went into developing the project (Wheatley, for his part, comes across as surprisingly earnest and well - intentioned, which isn't quite what one expects after
watching his
film).
On a deeper level, detached from the actual experience of
watching the
film, it's not unfair to question whether attributing human qualities to whales creates a myth about them that
obscures their true nature.
Make a joke about how Darth Vader breaths and they get it, but talk about anything more
obscure within the
films and they don't, revealing that they've never actually
watched the trilogy.
