Millions of American students had good reason to
watch last week's launch of the
space shuttle Columbia with unusually intense interest.
But I found myself crying not just when we get Dean's affecting and deeply personal description of the VAB, but when we meet strangers lined up along the side of the road waiting for hours to catch sight of a launch, when we meet the men and women — one man in particular, Omar Izquerido, an orbiter integrity clerk at the VAB — who have devoted their lives to the
space shuttle program, and who continue to devote themselves enthusiastically to their work even as they
watch its end creeping toward them.
