a water baptism indicated that a person would fully identify and immerse themselves in a new way of living for the future.

There are only 2 - 3 verses in the New Testament that are used to teach this idea, but a study of the context
indicates that either Spirit
baptism is in view (not
water baptism) or that the result of the
water baptism is not eternal life, but something else entirely.
Paul elsewhere
indicates that the real washing occurs with the
water of the Word (Eph 5:26), and even Peter himself seems to disregard
water baptism as having any real significance (cf. 1 Pet 3:21).
Cyprian, having made the point about
water and
baptism, goes on to look at further scriptural examples, including merging Isaiah 48:21 with John 19:34, to make the point that
water from the split rock
indicates Christ, «who is the rock, is split open during His passion by a blow from a lance.»
