Her inspiration had come from the
work of a Russian, Dr Igor Charkovsky, who in the 1970's had organised dolphin - assisted
births in the Black Sea and felt that the common evolutionary origins of humans and dolphins in
water explained a natural affinity.
At home I could control the environment — low, soft lighting; a limited number of people present and people that I trusted intimately; the opportunity to drink and eat if I needed sustenance for the

When we moved to New York in the»80s, it was impossible to find a midwife who would take our insurance, so I went to a doctor who
worked with midwives and pioneered using the Leboyer (precursor to
water birth) in New York.
Many of our surrogates
work with midwives and doulas in the hospital setting and some hospitals offer alternative birthing options such as
water birth.
Her therapist there, Dr Gowri Motha, also
works as an obstetrician at Whipps Cross Hospital where she arranges
water births.
Giving
birth in a pool of
water has been so beneficial for a lot of Moms, as their body relaxed more during contractions and they were able to naturally find the position that
worked for them to stay comfortable and
birth their babies in a safe and (relatively) painless way.
She
worked hard for a good

If you are inclined to think
water birth is dangerous, confirmation bias will lead you to think of one or two times when someone gave
birth in
water and it didn't
work out well.
