Department of Health officials sought to blame the Environmental Protection Agency for a contaminated
water crisis in upstate New York, saying
on Wednesday that they were confused and hamstrung by changing federal standards
on perfluorooctanoic acid, a toxic chemical known as PFOA.
The state's
Department of Environmental Conservation issued a statement citing its own «ongoing and aggressive response» to the Hoosick Falls
water, and saying that the E.P.A. was «finally acting»
on a January response for federal Superfund consideration.
«We knew that when it came time to start paying back the debt service
on these facility improvements and upgrades that there would be an impact
on the ratepayers,» said Steven P. Devan, P.E., Commissioner, Oneida County
Department of
Water Quality and
Water Pollution Control.
U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, Assemblyman Frank Skartados, Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino and Riverkeeper are calling
on the
Department of Defense to stop the discharge of PFOS contaminated
water from outfalls at the base to Silver Stream and other tributaries to Washington Lake, the city's main drinking
water source.
And
on Tuesday, State Senator Kemp Hannon, a Nassau County Republican who is the chairman of the Health Committee, criticized a December fact sheet from the Health
Department — which did not warn against drinking the
water, but did note possible health problems associated with PFOA — as «the most inconsistent letter I've ever seen.»
