Pie with Vanilla Bean Custard makes 1 10 - inch
pie ingredients: for the

Just a quick mention that my grandma used 7 - up (instead of
water) and lard
in her
pie crusts in case you want to experiment!
As you can see
in this
pie, I've swapped my usual buttermilk for
water to give a more sturdy
crust, since it's a custard
pie that will not have par - baking.
Moisten the edges of the
pie crust by dipping your fingers
in a little cold
water and spreading it around the dough round.
I prefer the taste of almond flour
in my
pie crust, but for a nut - free version, use my Grain - Free AP Flour Blend with cassava flour, decrease flour to 3/4 c and increase
water to 4 tbsp.
For a flakier
crust, whisk an egg yolk
in a small bowl, mix
in about a teaspoon of
water and brush lightly on top of
pie crust.
