In a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers have now assessed the impacts of human interventions on
water scarcity at a global scale.
The net effect is that populations in nations that import water can grow without restraint since they are not limited by
water scarcity at home.
Leading researchers now estimate that two - thirds of the world's population already live under conditions of severe
water scarcity at least one month of the year.

Taking into account past patterns of drought and
water use, the Columbia study reveals that several major metro areas, including New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, are
at high risk for
water scarcity, along with the Great Plains agricultural belt extending from North and South Dakota down to North Texas.

Scarcity is always an upsetting factor in a supply - demand equation, and
at some point,
water supply may well become a determining factor in real estate availability, pricing, and possession.
