For more than two decades, scientists studying hydrothermal circulation in
the water under the seafloor have assumed that the flow is relatively stable.

Macdonald says the process of continental plates spreading apart and filling in with magma is analogous to what happens on the deep
seafloor at mid-ocean ridges, which are difficult to study because they lie a few kilometres
under water.
Among other things, GRACE may have found a crater deep
under the Antarctic ice that may mark an asteroid impact greater than the one that doomed the dinosaurs, measured the
seafloor displacement that triggered the tsunami of 2004, and quantified changes in subsurface
water in the Amazon and Congo river basins.
The smoke turned out to contain concentrated metal sulfides, which the superheated salt
water was drawing out from the volcanic rock
under the
seafloor.
In the abyssal realm,
seafloor habitats
under areas of deep -
water formation (e.g., those in the North Atlantic and Southern Oceans) could experience a maximum decline in O2 concentration of 0.03 mL L — 1 by 2100 (i.e., a 0.5 % drop from current levels; Tables 2, 3; Figures 2, 3).
It rises up from the
seafloor and may come to just above or just
under the
water's surface.
Since, if I remember correctly, subduction generally occurs when a dense oceanic plate dives
under a less dense continental plate, you'd have to get the waste to the
seafloor and then bury it there in such a way that it wouldn't leak into the
water before it sank deep enough into the Earth to be safely forgotten about.
An educated guess would be that the leak originated
under water, potentially from the pipeline leading from the Douglas Complex, from the riser pipe from the
seafloor to the OSI, or from the
seafloor junction between the two.
