I would probably use a couple coats of polyurethane / polycrylic on a table top, but I've used
wax on my chalk painted kitchen cabinets and they have held up great.
As well as polycrylic vs
wax on the chalk painted finishes.
I like the look of
wax on chalk paint better but you're right, there is maintenance involved when you have a lot of traffic (cough... little, busy hands.)

I did buy AS books and was able to get a great result
on a coffee table after following her directions using
chalk paint, AS
wax and then aging with dark
wax.

chalk paint and then

Not sure what your color scheme is but you can't go wrong with
chalk paint & antique
wax - especially
on that style.
Using a
wax on top of
chalk paint, transforms the
paint into a matte finish.
I
painted the whole thing in black
chalk paint and then put clear
wax on it.
Chalk paint is pricey and a bit
on the thick side for me and I'm not wild about the finish or the fact that you have to
wax finish.
Before the
wax completely dried, I slopped
on a white wash I made out of about 50 % DIY white
chalk finish
paint and 50 % water.
For the
painted base I used Amy Howard
Chalk Paint in Cosmopolitan, with Annie Sloan clear
wax on top.
I used a combination of ASCP (I had some Paris Gray and some Graphite) and homemade
chalk paint, using SW Aesthetic White (leftover from our master bedroom), SW Kaffee (a sample I had considered for my office), Behr Cathedral and Behr Gray Morning (from my
wax - resist side tables), and SW Dovetail (which I used
on the toy armoire and my master bedroom window trim, among other things).
I used white
chalk paint on the shelves first, then buffed a little bit of dark paste
wax over the white to give them an antiqued look.
The only product we use
on our
chalk paint is Polyvine
Wax Varnish, it gives you that beautiful feel of
wax with the durability of varnish.
Hi, I plan
on painting my kitchen table with Annie Sloan
chalk paint, and then was going to use AS dark
wax to age it a little, AS clear
wax on top.
I also recently send
chalk paint and distress I use a
wax by Watco that I brush
on found it to show a chalky mark
on colors items.
The dry sink sits out
on our lani and I am concerned about using
chalk paint and if I should
wax.
After I
waxed with Annie Sloan soft
wax I applied General Finishes flat topcoat over the
chalk paint on the rungs of the chairs.
And I'm not sure the
wax would adhere as nicely as it does
on straight
chalk paint.

wax that is used
on chalk paint a buff.
You can
paint right over
chalk paint on your chest as long as you did not apply
wax or poly over it.
For you
chalk painted table top, you may not have had enough
wax on it.

I think I'll put some
wax on that PB tall candlestick I
chalk painted that I'm using as a place for my mug of coffee when in my (finally!!!)
I did use the
chalk paint on a very intricate nest of tables and was cursing mid-way through it as it was so hard to
wax, but I am happy I went through with it as the tables when finished looked amazing!

First, some leftover white
paint, then some more French Linen
chalk paint - then when each coat was dry, I roughed them up with a sanding block and rubbed
on a little more furniture
wax to seal them.

Chalk Paint ®
paint and
waxes.
On the white
chalk paint I thought that the dark
wax looked really dirty.
This is one big mirror (4 x 5) and I didn't feel like scrubbing
on a
wax then going back later to buff it out — the Topcoat Finish was a quick brush
on coat, one layer was enough to seal the
paint, leaving it matte, but still popping the true colors of the
chalk / clay
paints -
Again - I personally recommend

On all DIY
chalk paint projects, I have used clear
wax.
(don't use a new one since the old ones that have worn bristles are best and once you apply
wax to the bristles - you will not be using it again for
paint) If you plan
on doing more than one
Chalk Paint ™ by Annie Sloan project - or a LARGE piece — you may want to consider a
wax brush.
