class flights across the Atlantic start at 60,000 miles for a one -
way ticket, so you'll have to save up a few more miles to afford a round - trip
fare.

Business Class seat for 9,000 Avios and $ 13.95 (~ $ AU17.35):
With only 4 systemwide upgrades available per year, from 2017 onwards, buying discount Economy
Class fares with the idea of upgrading them to
Business Class won't work for someone who travels as much as I do — especially if I'm traveling with Joanna — so I need to come up with a
way to get around this issue.
In general these
fares will be lower than regular Main Cabin
fares in the same
way that Main Cabin
fares are lower than
Business Class.

Business Class fare between Manchester and Christchurch will earn over 60,000 KrisFlyer miles and, when you consider that a one -
way Business Class saver award between London and Sydney is just 68,000 miles (when booked online), that's a pretty good return!

I can't say that I'd bother checking this route for Economy

Even when you calculate your 40K United miles at about 1.5 cents per mile ($ 600, or $ 2,989 total), you still come out
way ahead of the
business class fare.
So if you booked economy
class and wanted to upgrade to
business class (even though you booked a paid
fare), the difference in Avios points would be 2X — X = X. For a route like Seattle to London, with two daily non-stops, that was only 25,000 Avios each
way.
