There's nothing quite like tearing down the highway, maneuvering in and
out of the
way of oncoming
traffic, and reaching your goal with mere seconds to spare.
But you have no
way of figuring
out the quality
of that
traffic.
On the
way to work today, near the start
of the journey, when I stopped in a queue
of traffic the engine quietly cut
out with no warning or stutter.
From the pickup location at LAX we slogged our
way through some classic L.A.
traffic to Venice Beach to meet up with Martin Squires, a surfer who runs a surf school
out of his classic VW Microbuses.
But on the
way home after about 10 minutes (when the engine got hot) I stopped for a
traffic light and I saw grey smoke coming from under the hood and
