All racing Greyhounds are trained to
wear basket muzzles during races and when they are turned out to play because their skin is so thin that they can easily injure one another while playing or in the heat of the race.
Often, dogs diagnosed with this disorder are encouraged to be walked on leash while
wearing a basket muzzle so that they can not consume dangerous items.
Not exact matches
I normally recommend
basket muzzles for dogs who will be
wearing them for longer periods of time (such as some of the patients I see for aggression problems, who may
wear a
muzzle for our entire training session every week), but for our purposes at the vet clinic, a regular cloth
muzzle is fine as long as your dog can still eat small treats with it on.
Further, it is completely appropriate to require such dogs to
wear a good quality plastic, wire
basket, or leather
muzzle when off the owner's premises.
Some safer options for exercise include playing ball or other games in the backyard, and walking during off - time in areas that aren't busy, with your dog
wearing a
basket style
muzzle.
Properly fitting
basket muzzles safeguard the health of dogs by allowing them to pant and drink while
muzzled (i.e. like those
worn by racing greyhounds).
