webOS as a
platform is currently
kept alive by LG, who purchased the
platform from HP in 2013 to develop into its own software
platform and has so far used it to develop a critically lauded smart TV
platform before shifting development to a possible
wearables platform in the vein of Samsung's Tizen with a rumored webOS - powered smartwatch.
Others seek to
keep up a program born out of subjective endeavours and shared with a worldwide community: such as LIFE SPORT in Athens, which sells «critical
wearables» — the LIFE SPORT joggers — as an attempt to generate alternative arts funding in a time and place where there is none; Opening Times, which is an online - only exhibition
platform; Peach, an exhibition space and home in Rotterdam; and I: project space, which fills a gap in the Beijing art scene by presenting video art and supporting artist exchange via residencies.
The Summit does run the latest version of Google's
wearable platform — Android Wear 2.0, with improved navigation, menu screens and a few new features sprinkled in — which at least
keeps it relevant.
As we see smartwatches rise in price and hardware improve, Google needs to ensure its software
keeps up otherwise we may see OEMs looking at alternative
platforms to power their
wearables.
