week, based upon this very broad assumption it's possible to suggest the average teacher works approximately 2000 + hours during an academic year, so it does beg the question, considering the Maxwell Curve; How much more
effective and «healthy» would the
teaching profession become if the principle
of «less is more» underpinned it's mantra?
As Dropout Nation noted last
week in its report on teacher evaluations, even the most - rigorous classroom observation approaches are far less accurate in identifying teacher quality than either value - added analysis
of test score data or even student surveys such as the Tripod system used by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part
of its Measures
of Effective Teaching project.
Factors considered important to the reform included the following: (a) meeting for 1 hour a
week in study groups; (b) meeting in cross-grade groups; (c) reflecting on
teaching in study groups; (d) considering research - based «best practices» in study groups; (e) completing action plans in study groups; (f) selecting substantive topics for study; (g) maintaining topics over time; (h) meeting as a whole faculty once a month to discuss reform efforts; (i) working on parent partnerships and making
effective use
of the external facilitator; and (j) making
effective use
of the internal leadership team.
The idea is gaining traction nationally, however, with the release this
week of the final report
of the massive Measures for
Effective Teaching (MET) research project conducted by the Bill & Belinda Gates Foundation, which looked at a variety
of ways
of evaluating teachers.
But EEF found mastery appeared to be «more
effective when used as an occasional or additional
teaching strategy» because impact fell for longer periods
of over 12
weeks.
