While the introduction of Tico and Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) added much
welcome character depth and development, the stories themselves failed to spark much interest.

And yet, by leaving things open - ended, Garland raises questions beyond those of VanderMeer's novel, shifting the focus away from hard science toward the psychology of his
characters, and introduces a compelling dilemma, à la «Arrival,» that gives the film a
welcome philosophical
depth.
Welcome to the Punch sets itself up as a rather conventional genre film, but where the writing may lack a
depth of
character or thematic weight it's more than made up for in terms of sensory - appealing thrills and a hyped up rhythm that keeps things moving along at an appropriately rapid pace.
Some of the more mature elements (a comment here or a peek there) are
welcome, not because they have the ability to corrupt children, but they actually add
depth to some of the
characters.
Each of the
characters move and speak differently to their counterparts and this strong
depth and level of detail is really
welcomed.
