Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender's Game) isn't particularly

cast to dream of down to the smallest roles, most of the actors giving the performance of their lifetime: J.Lo is hardly recognizable as the irrelevant pop singer of recent years, doing a great job as a female cop tempted by the attracting opposites of bank robber George Clooney, who was never

With stunning performances from its
cast, the film occur during the First World War, and it shows us the chaos, and considering the fact that this was made in 1930, it's an impressive feat in filmmaking, as what we have
here is a picture that captures the fear and agony of combat, and it's a
well made movie for its time, and it still looks great after all these years.
And while Farrell is admittedly quite
good as the smooth, charismatic Jerry, Yelchin is simply unable to become the compelling protagonist that the narrative clearly requires - with the actor's less - than - engrossing performance matched by an underwhelmingly bland supporting
cast (eg Toni Collette, playing Charley's concerned mother, is hopelessly wasted
here).
Ewan McGregor is great
here (if what I saw online is true and he did do all of his singing, then wow am I impressed, he has an amazing voice), Nicole Kidman is very
good too, as is John Leguizamo and the rest of the
cast.
I may be putting this film on a higher pedestal than it deserves, by stating that the sole reason this film is so
good is due to the fact that the
cast works terrifically together, but when a film desperately needs to do that in order for the story to work, not much else is needed
here.
Often
cast as a sex - symbol on the basis of her looks,
here Robbie's hair is dyed in some effort to deglamorize her (it only half works) but she's wonderful in the part, doing a
good job with her southern accent, and excellently conveying a character that's clearly led an ultra sheltered life, but now has to totally fend for herself, and even physically care for the often sick Ejiofor.
The
good news is that some parts of this shopping list are checked off with style and grace: Tony and Pepper are still, at heart, the leads in a screwball comedy — and Downey and Paltrow are top form
here; the new villain has the comics» Crimson Dynamo's name — Ivan Vanko [Mickey Rourke]-- but instead of wearing the hopelessly out of date crimson armor, wields a pair of plasma whips that can slice and dice even Stark's fancy suit; and finally, there's Justin Hammer [Sam Rockwell — who was a finalist in
casting Stark], a hi - tech weapons manufacturer who got Stark's old Department of Defence contracts even though he's not nearly as talented.
Zemeckis, who is
best known for «Forrest Gump» and «
Cast Away,» is a proven master of special effects, and
here he uses 3 - D technology with skill and sensitivity: The cable sequence kicks off a climax that turns «The Walk» from a jolly procedural into a reflective exploration of physical and existential extremes, or what Petit himself calls «ze void.»
