On your deathbed, you know that once you died you will find out whether God and
heaven do exist or not and you will find out soon enough so I don't think that
last minute ritual or prayer is
going to do anything
to change that.
I'd much rather spend my life believing, living my life as if there IS a
heaven as a reward, having the comfort of thinking that God will be there when I draw my
last breath, and being comforted with the thought as I watch the world
go to hell in a hand - basket... and not be aware after death that I was wrong because, as Hawking says..
Knowledge and who we «feel» is not
going to get us into
heaven, but the truth will... One day everybody, will have
to give an account
to God why we choose
to reject him, and we won't have an excues... I didn't know, I wanted
to, and all the others we come up with... You've heard who Jesus is, and still choose
to wall away... Jesus came so that everybody would be saved, he doesn't want

to listen
to his voice and choose

Last week's Gospel sums it up rather nicely... it is harder for a rich man
to gain entry into
heaven that for a camel
to go through the eye of a needle.
It follows that, when we
go to Mass, we effectively stake our eternal salvation on the profession that Jesus is God, telling
heaven that if He is not, then the true God may cast both Him and us into hell on the
Last Day.
Even though your diamond will
last a long time, it doesn't really matter because you can't take your diamonds with you when you
go to heaven.
And a fifth reason is that the portrayal of «the
last things» in these terms, indeed the emphasis on some destiny for man out of this world which makes what
goes on in this world merely preparatory for
heaven or a way of avoiding hell, is thought by a great many people
to entail a neglect of their duty here and now
to live in Christian love and
to find in that their deepest satisfaction, whatever may await them when this life is ended.
If you grew up in church, there's a good chance you were taught a pretty simple message about the afterlife: When you die, you either
go to heaven, or you
go to hell — both of which will
last forever and never change.
That everything you love, everything you hold dear, all of it eventually gets destroyed or burned up or
goes away and we
go somewhere else
to spend our eternal life — a vague
heaven, a worship service that
lasts forever, something like that.

going to be like for those that accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour.
