In the middle of rush hour on Aug. 1, at 6:04 p.m., traffic zoomed across
the westbound span of the I - 35 Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis.
The 62 - year - old Tappan Zee Bridge was then officially retired on October 6, 2017, after eastbound traffic was transferred to
the westbound span in a temporary traffic configuration (four traffic lanes in each direction).
Four lanes each of opposite - direction traffic on
the westbound span will continue until the eastbound span opens later this year, when each span will each have eight general traffic lane — four breakdown and emergency lanes and dedicated bus lanes — in addition to space for commuter rail when funds become available and a bicycle and walking path.
