There was worry about them bringing food to the classroom, and that being disruptive, but what we've found — for the high school kids, especially — is that they are usually done consuming their breakfast by the time they get to the classroom!
The stuff shown is a lot like what we see in Houston, where, like LAUSD, we also have a central kitchen and therefore a lot of food (at least at breakfast) comes wrapped in — and is reheated in — plastic.
There have been legitimate concerns about food waste, sanitation problems, lost instructional time, and the quality of the food served (though it has improved somewhat since the early days of the program, when the inclusion of daily animal crackers in the breakfast was what actually motivated me to start this blog.)

In what may be the first ever detailed look into how industry rebates dominate school food service, documents I obtained under the Freedom of Information Act indicate that more than 100 companies paid rebates in recent years to the food service management company hired by D.C. Public Schools — Chartwells — for everything from breakfast cereal, hamburger patties and canned green beans to paper cups, armored car services and drug counseling for employees.
