what ice core data is.
There have been a variety of discussions in the past week about
what ice core data tells us.

In summary, the
ice core data in no way contradict our understanding of the relationship between CO2 and temperature, and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with
what Gore says in the film.
The point of this post is that the
ice core data are entirely consistent with
what we already knew (and have known since 1896 A.D. when Arrhenius published his climate sensitivity calculations).
What the medical «experts» have missed is the fact that someone receiving a diagnosis of cancer will tend to smoke even more in an effort to calm himself down, setting up a feedback similar to what we see in the ice core d

what we see in the
ice core data.
I would also add that the «prediction» made by # 11 about
what a D - O event would look like is based on the Greenland
ice core records, and the picture of «abrupt warming / slow cooling» picture comes from the
data on millennial timescales.

Among other things, we know about diffusion, the gaussian filter effect that takes out short term variability that might explain the smooth
ice core data, etc., but when taking readings from the air samples in
ice,
what is the mechanism for accounting for the CO2 contained in the
ice itself?
When sceptics look at statistical
data, whether it is recent
ice melt, deep sea temperatures, current trend in global surface temperatures, troposphere temperatures,
ice core records etc. they look at the
data as it is without any pre-conceptions and describe
what it says.
Nancy Bertler explains how
ice cores are analysed and how
data from
ice cores helps scientists to understand
what Earth's climate was like in the past, over the last million years or so.
What matters is not the warming rate since the mid-19th century but the fact that
ice core data reveal the existence of a quasi-millenarian (natural) oscillation, that well correlates with observed (mean) warming observed since the mid-19th century.
exactly... i recall seeing a graph produced from
ice core samples in which the CO2 content of thousands of years past was measured against tree ring
data...
what it showed was CO2 levels rising 300 years after rapid vegetative growth (natural warming) and incidently the PPM of CO2 measured higher than current levels.
It is possible to do this with
ice core data, and
what is found is the maximum correlation extends out to around 800 years or so:
I spent a week listening to 80 paleoclimatoligists and climate modelers argue about the interpretation of the
data from
ice and sediment
cores, how it eliminated some proposed explanations for
what was driving the changes in temperature and rainfall, and how it suggested other possible explanations.
An important point, which we have discussed elsewhere on attribution of CO2 in the
Ice Cores, when comparing
data looking for signals, is that we are making reasonable assumptions about
what we would expect to see before we looking at the
data.
Ice core data shows that this is
what happens.

what has caused the recent increase to atmospheric CO2 concentration because its temporal resolution is too low.

data and the

What all of this «
data» leaves out is the tree - ring minima and
ice core acidity peaks that, when integrated with other regional and global climatological events stretching back, at the very least, to 4375 BCE, present a picture of some kind of cyclical, apparently cosmically induced climate cycle.
The difference between
ice core measurements and proxy
data (like stomata
data) is that with proper equipment and handling, the
ice cores give a rather good sample of the real atmosphere of many years to milennia ago, while proxies need some translation between
what you measure and ancient reality...
It is not possible to calculate the effect of anthropogenic CO2 until we know within closer limits
what the natural variation is.For example if you look at the
ice core data for the Holocene and if you believe that CO2 is the climate driver you would have to conclude that on a scale of thousands of years CO2 was an Ice House — not a green house gas.For the data and an estimate of the coming cooling for the next few hundred years check the post» Climate Forecasting for Britain's Seven Alarmist Scientists and for UK Politicians.&raq
