This is a whole -
wheat version of basic white sandwich bread.
I'm a big fan of farina (
the wheat version of grits, which are made from corn) and I love all things corn, so I was intrigued.
I've tried making whole
wheat versions of things, but it's quite tricky as you know.

It's not gluten free, so I knew I had to make a
version of it that would be friendly to those like me (not intolerant but I try to keep it out
of my diet whenever possible) or anyone else allergic to
wheat products.
Ditching the paper - thin pastry for whole -
wheat flour and eggs, they still taste a lot like the traditional Greek
version but have the added benefit
of bringing some butternut squash into the picture.

We used Giusto's Organic Unbleached All - Family
Wheat Flour (their
version of all - purpose) and the crumb and texture were perfect.
Our final
version has just 1 1/2 tablespoons
of butter (instead
of the original 7 tablespoons), lots
of whole
wheat flour, and just 3/4 cup
of white chocolate chips (instead
of the original whopping 2 cups — and it's still PLENTY!).
I made super-teensy
versions of these, and also whole
wheat sables studded with June's candied peel (I'll try to post that recipe soon).
With white whole -
wheat flour and yogurt, this was a somewhat lightened
version of the usual banana loaf.
This is a
wheat - free
version of the cake as it's made with rye flour; I find that rye flour gives it a very nice texture and flavour, but feel free to use any type
of flour you like.
The 9 litre
version easily hold 5kgs
of vital
wheat gluten flour, so they are plenty big enough.

Hubby was okay with it, he was expecting his favorite

I even gained some confidence to play around with the recipe a little and so today I'm sharing a whole
wheat chocolate chip
version of her best buttermilk pancakes.
If you don't need them to be Whole30 - compliant you can use Tamari sauce or Bragg's Liquid Aminos (
wheat - free
versions of soy sauce).
Many different brands sell a
version of this and it's carried at all my local grocery stores, but if you have trouble finding it you can definitely substitute regular whole
wheat or all - purpose white flour.
These are a delightfully simple, healthier

of garlic powered), 1/2 cup pizza sauce, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, 1/4 teaspoon
of crushed red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper to taste.I then top with ~ 2 tablespoons
of reduced fat mozzarella cheese, ~ 2 tablespoons
of pizza sauce, and 3 turkey pepperonis (full recipe will come later).
In my
version I did a blend
of whole
wheat couscous and bulgur
wheat cooked in low sodium vegetable broth, added chickpeas and finished it with with grated parmesan.
I haven't made a real pizza in quite some time — although last month I did make a vegan
version of pizza on whole
wheat pitas with a vegan cheese sauce I made from scratch, that was quite delicious!
I would say that the Brown Rice
version is crispier than the traditional
wheat, but packed a balanced flavor punch
of salt & pepper that made my taste buds say «more, please!»
However, we prefer the nutritional advantage
of using all whole -
wheat pastry flour, and our tasters also slightly preferred the taste
of the
version made with whole -
wheat pastry flour.
It's one
of my favorite pastas for summer time and I can't find whole
wheat versions anywhere!
I also love the way they look - but I suppose I am biased;)... For a gluten and
wheat - free
version of the tart, please look to the head notes.

Maybe the lightness
of the white
wheat flour could be the key in getting the
wheat based
versions of this bread to rise?

version of these, it shouldn't be too hard for you finding something to replace the whole
wheat flour with.
I used white whole
wheat flour but you can substitute a combo
of almond, oat, and / or coconut flours if you want a gluten - free
version.
I just ran across this recipe a couple
of days ago and whipped up a whole
wheat, oat flour
version with a bit
of all purpose flour too.
When I get the craving, I'll often just make a pit stop at my corner deli and either order their
version of my go - to turkey club, or, in this case, if I have some random sandwich fixings already, I'll ask them to just sell me two pieces
of whole
wheat sandwich bread for 50 cents.
I will keep my eye out for the whole
wheat version and the healthier kind
of sausages too.
