The GT comes standard with a performance steering
setup and turning the
wheel did feel a bit better than in the SXT, but the all -
wheel drive system rarely let its presence be known (an unsurprising consequence of perfectly dry summer roads) and its on - road demeanor was not noticeably different.
But from behind the
wheel it was a clumsy car to
drive in some respects, with brake pedal responses that didn't match those of the throttle, steering that always felt detached from the rear axle somehow, and a chassis
setup that was nothing if not determined in its desire to provide safe but endless amounts of understeer.
I don't mind Volvo's venerable inline - five engine and front -
wheel -
drive as a base
setup, but by the time the price balloons past $ 45,000, I expect all -
wheel -
drive and perhaps an optional six - cylinder.
While the Merc unit almost matches the ZF in terms of comfort
driving, it clearly falls behind when it comes to quick shifts and driver interaction — the paddles on the AMG steering
wheel are aptly placed, but the
setup doesn't necessarily invite you to use them.
The GLC however
does make the most use of its all -
wheel -
drive setup and there is enough grip to rip the road right off its foundation.
If you plan on venturing far from paved roads, a Subaru Forester offers more ground clearance and a superior all -
wheel -
drive setup, as
do the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Escape.
Thanks to a mechanical limited - slip differential and a clever front suspension
setup it
does an amazing job of managing all that power, giving the kind of traction that simply wasn't possible in front -
wheel drive cars a few years ago.
With a reconfigured all -
wheel drive setup, available torque - vectoring and a sport rear differential, the S5
does its best to minimize this trait and the overall impressions are of a very well planted car that offers an astounding level of control even at very high cornering speeds.
In fact, the only competitor that is less expensive to buy initially is the $ 66,900 Mercedes - Benz CLS — though the Audi A7's pricing advantage
does return if you decide to replace the Mercedes» rear -
wheel drive setup with the optional, $ 2,500 all -
wheel drive system.
Ferrari's patented system is unlike any other, and
does without the transfer case and center differential of a conventional all -
wheel drive setup.
The default
setup is enthusiast - approved rear -
wheel drive, but don't for one second think that the XE is too driver - centric.
It sort of reminds me of how the Volkswagen Golf R was
setup, which is another sport compact that's quick, offers all -
wheel drive, but is priced at about $ 10,000 more than the ST. Bump stiffness over road ruts is stiff, which I'm thinking has more to
do with the stiff sidewalls on the performance - oriented Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tires fitted on the car.
Instead the Leon Cupra keeps the front
wheel drive setup of the lesser models, but that
does also include XDS and ESP traction control / performance enhancing systems.
The standard front -
wheel drive setup and comfort - biased suspension
do not make for a very involving handling combination and the Cadenza is far more comfortable when
driven within its limits.
