McCall not only gave Cuomo cover back when it looked like he might again mount a primary challenge against a black gubernatorial candidate (in this case, a sitting governor — the first African American to hold the post, David Paterson), but also stood by
him when other black leaders were complaining about the lack of diversity on the statewide Democratic ticket.
