when teacher union leaders step up to support teachers, students, parents and public schools

The vote came a few months after the state's
teachers unions, closely aligned with the Assembly, claimed a victory in December
when the Regents, prompted by the governor and Legislative
leaders, placed a moratorium on the use of student test scores in
teacher evaluations.
But in Oklahoma — unlike West Virginia —
when state
union leaders called members back to school,
teachers returned, even though the legislature had budged no further.
When he officially took the helm as
leader of the city school system he certainly inherited a number of challenges: poor graduation rates, gaps in special education services, burned bridges between his predecessor, Jean Claude Brizard, and the
teachers union and the school board, among a host of others things.

It's all too easy to make mistakes
when you're emotional about the rigged
teachers» contract by an incompetent Board of Education majority who sold out the school district as payback to
teacher's
union leader Phil Rumore for his election support.
Certainly not a major
teachers union leader at a time
when the national movement is toward holding
teachers accountable.
Union leaders often invoke norms of justice
when seeking to ensure that veteran
teachers continue to enjoy the same perks and protections they were implicitly promised
when they entered the profession a quarter century ago — despite intervening changes in the larger world, in the needs of students, and in management and organizational practice.
DS: Well, first of all,
when I discuss the idea of a state wide curriculum with the
leaders of both the NYSUT and the UFT [
teacher unions], they were and are enthusiastic.
Unions deserve their share of the blame for making it tough to remove lousy
teachers, but the fact that 99 % of
teachers are routinely rated as satisfactory can be chalked up almost entirely to school and district
leaders failing to do their job
when it comes to evaluating personnel (unless you happen to believe we have 3.4 million phenomenal
teachers).
When schools were «stigmatised» by bad Ofsted reports, recruiting staff and pupils became more difficult and schools could be «trapped in cycles of underperformance», said Mr Barton,

The Argus
Leader reported that «school boards and the
teachers union balked
when [the law] made that evaluation system mandatory; they argued local school boards know best» (Verges, 2012, p. 3).
But
when you talk to progressive
union leaders and the
teachers at the vanguard of this new movement, it's striking how much they have in common — even accounting for disagreements around specific policies.
Randi Weingarten — who should be prepping for her Red Carpet appearance — and other
teacher union leaders talk such a good game, but
when the curtain is drawn back, all that's there is a self - serving agenda.
The schools minister was defiant
when he appeared in front of the House of Commons education committee on Wednesday, following almost 90 minutes of evidence from
teacher training experts and
union leaders.
Another 300
teachers joined the TLI in 2014.55 All participating
teachers learn skills associated with three kinds of leadership: instructional leadership, or how
teacher leaders can improve the systems that support
teachers and students within schools and districts; policy leadership, or how
teacher leaders can influence policymakers at local, state, and national levels; and association leadership, or how
teacher leaders can advance the goals of their local and national
unions.56
When they return to their districts, these
teacher leaders work to address leadership challenges that they identified through their training.
Over the last several years federal and state accountability legislation has come under attack from a duo of strange bedfellows: Tea Party / Trump - ish acolytes who wave the banner of local control and
teacher union leaders who disdain objective measurements of student learning, at least
when they're tied to
teacher evaluations and job security.
These inspiring fights will leave a more lasting impression
when teacher leaders use them to build their
unions into powerful forces for social transformation.
The
union views itself as «the co-equal fourth branch of government,» said Oakland Democrat Don Perata, a former
teacher who crossed swords with the group
when he was state Senate
leader.
