Where Is Teaching Really Different?
It will certainly improve the morale of
teachers and school leaders; after all, who would want to work in a system
where the majority of children do not perform at a minimum level of proficiency?
School leaders need to focus their attention on creating the conditions
where teachers have the resources, courage,
and support to experiment with improving their practice,
and then the space to share what they are learning with other educators.
Teaching effectiveness measures have great potential to provide
teachers with feedback as they work to hone their craft
and to help
school system
leaders understand
where support for better teaching
and learning is needed, whether that support is effective,
and, ultimately, how to design a system of supports to get better results.
Though we have little doubt that
teachers, principals,
and school leaders in district
schools genuinely desire to enact the types of reforms that will benefit students, the traditional incentive structures that have long dominated K — 12 education stifle bold action when
and where it is needed.
Tension also surfaced when
