I guess for my purposes, there are a couple of big considerations: (1) I
want to choose an approach

which allowed the publishers to decide what price Apple would charge for their books on the iPad — Amazon had deals that paid a specific wholesale price to publishers for a certain number of copies, and then it was able to charge whatever it
wanted for the books in the Kindle store.

want print rights only.
If there's a book I
want to read that I don't
want to put down money for up front, I already have a way to address that: the Seattle Public Library and the King County Library System, both of
which are very friendly to
ebook checkouts.
Apple is talking about
wanting Sony to offer a way for people to buy Sony
ebooks through the Sony
ebook app,
which would give Apple a 30 % cut of those sales.
It would seem that Amazon is not content with controlling more than 50 % of the
ebook market they also
want to control the reviews and thereby control
which writers sell and
which don't.
Only focusing on
ebooks is like facing an army and thinking you can pick
which soldier you
want to fight while ignoring the rest.
The first step in figuring out
which formats you'll need for you book is picking where you
want to publish and if you
want to produce print books,
ebooks or both.

If getting published traditionally doesn't especially help you to get your books on the shelves of stores (unless you are talented, awesome, hard - working, and lucky enough to be a Jim Butcher), then you've got a legitimate reason to question whether you
want to roll the dice with traditional publishers (who absolutely offer many great advantages), or get 70 % royalties on your indie
ebooks and get paid 80 % of your print book's list price (minus the cost of POD printing) with your print - on - demand book via Lightning Source and their 20 % short discount option —
which gets you right into Amazon.com and other online bookstores, just like the big boys do.
The second
eBook reader
which you might
want to look at is Tom's eTextReader (aka, eTR).
And downward price pressure on
ebooks means we ultimately get paid less,
which means it's harder for us to make the living we do,
which means both our ability and our financial incentives to write the stories readers
want to see are compromised.
After all, it offers the highest percentage royalty, and
eBooks are usually priced lower than print books,
which appeals to readers who might not
want to drop $ 15 on an author they've never heard of.
