of our day could feel comfortable and undisturbed: a
church that lives without question or resistance in a state founded on violence and made prosperous by the exploitation
of less fortunate nations; a
church that accepts various perquisites from that state as its due; a
church where changing jobs for the sake
of peace and justice is seldom considered; a
church that constantly speaks in the language
of war; a
church given to eloquent invective in its internal disputes and against outside opponents; a
church quite sure that God will punish the wicked.
One
of the accusations to
which Catholic historians have sometimes been vulnerable is that their presentations
of the
Church's progress are one -
sided or partisan.
On the other
side, the party
of continuity is «the Catholic center,» or simply «the Catholic
Church,»
which «remains the continuing community to
which Jesus promised he would send the Spirit, and the Spirit will lead us into, and keep us in, the truth....

church, located where we happen to live and

side — the imperfect expression, if you will —
of what the New Testament thinks
of as the «Body
of Christ» and describes as «without spot or blemish,» as «the household
of faith,» and as «the family

There are various ways in
which the
church has entered the lists on the
side of humanity and fought for better health systems, schools, mental health programs, and the like.
This huge ministry —
which offers housing for the homeless, food for the hungry, preschool for kids whose families couldn't afford it otherwise, green groceries in a food desert, and a community to belong to — started out with Arloa scooping out spaghetti to a couple

of theological questions, set the tone for the Questions genre
of the Middle Ages, The writer set out a Question, stated the best arguments on both
sides (thesis and antitheses), made a determination (synthesis), and then rebutted each
