Adding a
sweetener to the chocolate protein drizzle is optional and depends on your preference for sweetness and the protein powder you
use which may already add a sweet flavor.
Using an unsweetened variety will change the flavor slightly,
which may be perfect for you, or may prompt you to add just a touch more
sweetener (of your choice).
I made the sauce
using coconut sugar, an unrefined
sweetener,
which has a rich flavour but brown sugar will work just as well.
Instead of refined sugars, I
used agave syrup
which is healthier and has the neutral flavor, but you can replace syrup with any natural
sweetener — like honey, stevia etc..
I had agave
which I
used as the
sweetener for the dressing and topped off the salad with blistered cherry tomatoes and some queso fresco cheese.
To make real chocolate you don't
use coconut oil, you
use cocoa butter and cocoa powder (or cacao versions
which are less processed if you want to get really authentic) and a
sweetener like ricemalt syrup.
If
sweeteners are
used, then they should be limited to a tablespoon per day of raw honey (
which has antimicrobial compounds) or of dextrose powder (
which lacks fructose and is more readily absorbed).
I did not calculate and it depends on how many cups of spaghetti squash you
use /
which sweeteners and such.
When heated, it melts to a liquid and is unable to caramelize
which is the primary reason we
use it in combination with other natural
sweeteners.
This recipe
uses corn syrup,
which I know many people prefer not to
use, but Wholesome
Sweeteners makes an organic non-GMO variety.
You can substitute your preferred sugar 1:1, such as refined white sugar or coconut sugar (
which has more of an unrefined, molasses - quality taste) but please take note that if you prefer to
use a liquid
sweetener such as agave nectar, it can change the consistency and taste of my recipe.
My favorite version
uses maple sugar as the
sweetener,
which can easily be subbed with lakanto or other granulated
sweeteners like coconut sugar.
I have tried to stay away from non sugar
sweeteners but the one that looks the most promising is xylitol
which I see that you
use.
Then there's the artificial
sweetener they
use, sucralose,
which was shown to cause cancer in animal studies...
Otherwise, I suggest
used date paste (see my recipe HERE)
which is the ultimate whole - food
sweetener.
To add plant based protein and make them a bit more filling I have
used Fit Delis Chocolate protein powders
which also contains other incredible superfoods, no artificial
sweeteners, flavours and thickeners.
As the maple syrup
sweetener, I
used Walden Farms pancake syrup,
which contains no sugar, calories or fat.
(I
use pure stevia leaf powder as a
sweetener which would not add to consistency).
But from time to time, we need to cut down on the sugar
which is why I love
using natural
sweeteners.
For a sugar alternative, I have
used erythritol — a naturally occuring
sweetener which has no impact on blood sugars and has almost no calories at all!
I've made almond «milk»
which I'd consider trying in homemade ice cream, but I wouldn't
use commercial almond milk as it's too processed and full of additives and usually
sweeteners.
In this recipe, I've
used orange juice (
which also doubled as a member of the acidity squad mentioned above), but adding up to 1 tbsp of liquid
sweetener such as maple syrup or honey would work a treat.
If you are following a ketogenic diet than this recipe will work for you as long as you
use a
sweetener such as the keto maple syrup
which contains monk fruit and erythritol,
which are natural sweetening agents that do not impact your blood sugar levels.
I've
used coconut sugar (one of my favourite ingredients)
which has a deliciously deep and dark caramel taste and is also one of the more healthier
sweeteners with a low GI and high mineral content.
So, I
used stevia drops (even tho you said it didn't necessarily need
sweetener to be yummo,
which is awesome.
I changed the original recipe,
which used honey or maple syrup and instead substituted stevia
which is an all - natural
sweetener that is 100 times as sweet as sugar.
As I work through some of my recent recipe successes, a few may still contain
sweeteners which is good for those of you still
using them.
I would be very interested to hear your views on the subject of
sweeteners, in particular whether you recommend
using them at all (as they all definitely have an impact on blood glucose levels) and if they are being
used,
which are «best» from your perspective.
If so, feel free to add more
sweetener to this recipe, or you can
use a more highly processed cocoa powder like «Dutch processed»
which will have a more mellow taste.
The first time I made these I
used Wholesome
Sweeteners Organic Molasses,
which is a blackstrap type, and the cookies were appropriately intense.

I
used erythritol,
which is a natural zero - calorie
sweetener, so that people with pre - diabetes / diabetes or people who want to lose fat / weight can enjoy this dessert for the holidays with no guilt.
For this reason I didn't add any additional
sweeteners to this, but if you want a sweeter version you can always
use alternative
sweeteners (
which aren't as harsh on the body as refined sugar) and add a touch of pure maple syrup to the lemon coconut whipped cream or drizzle the parfait with honey.
The future of non-nutrative
sweeteners may see a rise in the utilization of alitame, neotame and thaumantin all of
which have been granted permission for
use.
She originally
used coconut sugar but we substituted keto maple syrup,
which has monk fruit, erythritol and stevia
which are all natural
sweeteners that do not impact our blood sugar.
These can also be reduced further from sugar calories and you could
use Stevia instead
which is a 0 calorie natural
sweetener.

Sweetener in my hot tea that I drink daily and also in ice tea
which I sometimes drink.

which is usually really most and has added

I
used mellow agave nectar to sweeten the macaroons, as I didn't want the slightly tart lemon flavor to be usurped by the robust flavor of maple syrup (
which was the
sweetener for the other macaroons).
Rice syrup is considered a better choice of
sweetener as it contains predominantly glucose
which our bodies easily
use as fuel, and no fructose
which is the sugar our bodies can't

The place to find monk fruit today is in products,
which use this as a natural
sweetener.
Also known as luo han guo,
which means monk fruit in Chinese — it is said to have been first discovered and
used by Chinese monks in the Guilin region where Layn is headquartered - the low calorie, natural
sweetener could give stevia a run for its money.
For the
sweetener, I
used date molasses
which is lower in sugar than other natural
sweeteners and retains some of the healthful benefits of dates.
