If you were using a paint color other then
white and were going to sand to distress, though... you should not use
Kilz or any
white primer since you would see the
white layer in between the wood and the paint color when you sand.
If you are planning to sand to distress the piece you will still be Ok since
Kilz is
white.

Hi Phyllis — If you plan to distress the chalk paint in areas with sandpaper, you will see the stark
white of the Kilz against the warmer white of the Old W
white of the

If I am using
white paint and the piece is really smelly and old, I brush on one coat of
Kilz original.

Yes, I sanded them (just slightly until the shine was gone), then primed them with
Kilz, then painted with ultra
white semi gloss paint.
To get good coverage it involved one coat of
Kilz primer, followed by three coats of Benjamin Moore «Simply
White».
If I am painting an old piece
white — I use one coat of
Kilz Original primer on it.
We recommend using General Finishes Stain Blocker,
Kilz or Zinsser
white pigmented shellac based primers.
