As with all works from this period by Martin, Happy Holiday was begun by priming the entire surface of the canvas with an opaque coating of white acrylic gesso, which is never fully covered by subsequent layers of colour.

Generating her most delicate tones by diluting acrylic and combining it with the chalky white gesso, Martin's canvases produce a surface that both reflects and absorbs light.

The white areas of this pattern appear to be the uncovered acrylic gesso primer and the black pattern was probably created using a scrunched up rag that was dipped in black emulsion paint and then dabbed all over the stretched canvas.

The first four pieces one sees upon entering, a series of white, blue, yellow, and black paintings which utilize acrylics, oil, and magic sculpt on gesso boards are each adorned with a single word, «washed», «blood», «bellied», and «power».

Next she added colour, mixing and modulating her own shades of acrylic paint, skilfully diluting and mixing them with chalky white gesso to create luminous, light infused colour.

The gesso are supposively made from a mixture of white glue, Plaster of Paris, or something similar, and ordinary latex or acrylic paint.
