He painted mostly on Masonite, using a palette knife to prime the surface with layers
of white gesso, then applying each color minimally for maximum effect — one coat of pure color, straight from a tube.
Taking humble materials and found objects, he coated them in

Each of the three paintings featured a stenciled thicket of black lines crisscrossing a field of bright orange brushwork and
white gesso, with a pitch - black area taking over the right third of the support.
