The exhibition features six
works from the «Sarrafos» series, composed of
white tempera panels intersected by a single, angled black bar, and
works from «Brancos e Pretos,» seemingly flat panels punctuated by painted arcs and lines that reveal slight variations of texture to cast shadows and form subtle sculptural
reliefs.
A two - panel black and
white relief, completed early in 2007, is the oldest
work in the exhibition and anticipates the diagonal paintings.
The
work there — in a show called, simply, «Ellsworth Kelly at Ninety» — features large
reliefs in his trademark rich hues (a deep sky - blue square with rounded corners), but also black and
white.
CIMA's airy spaces lend the

These include a new series of
works called «
Reliefs,» that are densely layered, beaded panels which recall Muslim prayer rugs on which they are partly based, while being reminiscent of topographical maps of cities, abstract art, and mysterious altars; and «Continuous Mile,» a mile - long rope woven entirely out of cotton and bone -
white beads.
Connecting artists through the medium of monochrome
reliefs — a sculptural technique that raises forms and figures above the background plane — the gallery's show focuses on the abstract
white relief and traces its international evolution from the 1930s to the 1970s (there are a few later
works in the mix as well).
Importantly, this latest collection also exposes a completely different body of
work: the experimental use of oils on the new medium of black or
white fibreglass, which allows for a gentler application of paint, creating a lighter
relief.
Notable
works by Tapies include: Gray

So the
work is
white, flat, lozenged, painted, rendered, printed, textual, assembled, and collaged — a naked abstract painting in low
relief.
Mikus arrived in New York in 1960, and in 1961 painted the first of her «Tablets» — the name she gave to a series of black,
white and gray
works that merge painting and bas -
relief.
His
works of this period, perhaps his finest, consist of geometrical abstract paintings composed of rectangles and circles of clear, uniform colors and of carved
white reliefs of extraordinary purity, made from wood and synthetic board.
As to the
white reliefs, begun when Reynolds was in his 50s and occupying the last 30 years of his career, these echoed
works by Nicholson made in the early 30s.
It shows the way Nicholson's
work developed in response to Mondrian's, with colourful paintings with wobbly lines giving way to austere
white reliefs — one carved out of a table bought from Camden market.
