For his ongoing «Glitchometry» series, shown last year at Transfer Gallery in Brooklyn and at this year's Pulse New York art fair, Temkin uploads illustrations of simple black - and - white shapes (stripes, circles, triangles, squares) into sound - editing software.
From September 1959 to January 1960 de Kooning sojourned in Italy, working in Rome, where he produced what are now known as his «black and white» paintings, such as Black and White (Rome) 1959 (fig. 6).24 These are highly reminiscent of Kline's signature style in their combination of bold gestural abstraction, a black and white palette and structured compositions that consist of a series of emphatic strokes that are at odds with each other and positioned at angles that create nearly regular geometric shapes, such as triangles and squwhite» paintings, such as Black and White (Rome) 1959 (fig. 6).24 These are highly reminiscent of Kline's signature style in their combination of bold gestural abstraction, a black and white palette and structured compositions that consist of a series of emphatic strokes that are at odds with each other and positioned at angles that create nearly regular geometric shapes, such as triangles and squWhite (Rome) 1959 (fig. 6).24 These are highly reminiscent of Kline's signature style in their combination of bold gestural abstraction, a black and white palette and structured compositions that consist of a series of emphatic strokes that are at odds with each other and positioned at angles that create nearly regular geometric shapes, such as triangles and squwhite palette and structured compositions that consist of a series of emphatic strokes that are at odds with each other and positioned at angles that create nearly regular geometric shapes, such as triangles and squares.
But what started as many meter - lengths of knitted, black and white triangles and rhombuses, and were subsequently stitched together and placed on stretcher bars have, in Rechs» Brussels space, morphed into around 20 weavings in his favored neutral tones as well as salmons, deep and robin's egg blues, yellow, and kelly green.
In 1967, he painted «Untitled (Alabama),» which consists of a predominately black background and two triangular shapes, tightly packed with white and black lines that conjure people, crosses, and Ku Klux Klan hoods; the triangles form a blade slicing through black space.
«Untitled» (1989), for example, depicts two shapes: a circle, outlined in pencil and shaded in white, with a wedge cut out; and a triangle, shaded in a sienna hue, that pierces the circle, with the intimation of shadow peeking from behind it.
In Robert Holyhead's Untitled (yellow), a variegated yellow ground is interrupted by two, flatly painted, white triangular shapes reading as cut - outs, accompanied by a vertical line of a different yellow, running along the right hand edge branching out at top and bottom into two triangles causing the yellow of the ground to recede, and creating a lively ambiguous space.
