Space embraces change, progress, and unpredictability, breaking the traditional archetypes
of the
white -
wall gallery spacespace.
The work as such is not grouped thematically within the several rooms
of the
gallery, but rather it is hung aesthetically within a very open
white -
walled space such that work in differing rooms and nooks and corners can communicate effectively with one another and with the viewer depending upon one's orientation.
Flying atop a pole in front
of the old school building that now houses
white -
walled gallery spaces, the flag anticipated an inaugural exhibition
of works by Nick Cave.
We soon took over the garage
of our building and converted it into a studio /
gallery space — 50 % very grungy garage and 50 %
white -
walled.

These enigmatic phrases are interspersed with abstract sculptural structures, which consist
of white powder - coated aluminum frameworks holding sheets
of colored Plexiglas, which — much like the texts on the
walls — redefine the architectural
space of the
gallery.
To be fair, I've seen some
of the foundation's large - scale paintings installed in large,
white -
walled galleries; there, the monumental indifference seemed humorous, since they were able to mock the expansive, commercial
gallery space; in this congested
space, they lose that bite.
This performance extended outside the confines
of the structure into the wider
gallery space, containing
wall - based neon sculptures
of a muscular faun, black and
white photographs
of a naked couple in choreographed poses, text - based brightly coloured paintings, and abstract sculptures reminiscent
of limbs, rendered in concrete and highly polished
white plaster.
Broad windows in the
walls of the
white cube - style
galleries will side light the
spaces, giving curators working with Piano's top - lit
galleries more options to display light - sensitive or demanding works.
