of goodness personified (Snow
White, the third Little Pig, Dumbo, Pollyanna) and the essence

Harkening back to Hitchcock in a way most people only dream
of, it greatest heir (De Palma) particularly is interested in his black and
white films for David Selznick (Notorious, Spellbound) in reaching the desired
world of intrigue, then the
film kicks in and Cruise gets his hands dirty in a way many wondered if he would have the guts to.
Few
films rise above the
white noise
of the indie
film world to actually standout as something remarkable and worth watching.

As fluid as Marjane's developing identity and worldview, the
film's largely black - and -
white and refreshingly unique visuals bring us into a
world of memory and emotion.
This year's biggest downer — which is not to take away from the qualities
of the
film — «Amour» represents a change for director Michael Haneke, whose «Funny Games» is a remarkable thriller about the takeover
of a household by two psychopathic youths and whose «The
White Ribbon» looks at mysterious goings - on in a feudal village in Germany prior to
World War I.
What results is a kind
of photographic negative
of the comparably more pastel - hued Annie Hall, a mellow, grayscale romantic melodrama with a liberal dosage
of one - liners that would be taken for chemical impurities if the
film weren't also manifestly abstracted by Gordon Willis's
world - class black - and -
white cinematography.
Needless to say, this hyper - atmospheric art
film is a little too reliant on its environment, but the deep snow setting
of this lyrically bleak drama was always going to be instrumental in the establishment
of both tone and aesthetic value, and sure enough, this
film's beautiful environment goes complimented by cinematography by Bedřich Baťka which, while held back by a black - and -
white palette, is playful enough in lighting and scope to attract you into this
film's handsome
world.
Set against the backdrop
of the Mississippi Delta during the Jim Crow era after
World War II, Mudbound is both a timeless and timely
film following two families — one black, one
white — bound together by the hardships
of farm life.
Or maybe there is some deeper layer to the
film that pushes the quirk and clichés into something more interesting — we could, for example, read the
film as within the construct
of an unreliable or limited narrator, for Greg, a clearly rather self - absorbed,
white, teenaged boy, is our guide through this
world.

world of Wild Boys is lusciously unreal, its artifice reminiscent
of those Maddin
films that most resemble fantasy tableaux in department store windows at Christmas.
