The colour fields are inextricably linked to her black and
white canvases, the subjects of the latter — sparingly painted so as to retain the appearance of the canvas
weave — resulting from internet searches that occur to her whilst
working on the abstracts.
Works such as her 2011 Shadow
Weave series, which depict Op Art - inspired patterns, seemingly generated by a computer, using only inter-woven black and
white strips of canvas, playing at the boundaries between the digital and the material as well as high aesthetic formalism and functionalism.
For the exhibition at Goodman Gallery, Lou explores the surface normally accepted as the ground for art — the canvas — making it into the subject of the
work, but instead of cloth, the «canvas» here is
woven out of unified, off -
white glass beads.
While earlier
works maintain a dense
weave, increasingly the
white gathers into a few thick, bright cords.
By 1949 Scarpitta was exhibiting daring
works in major galleries in Rome and Milan; his
woven constructions and
white paintings affected colleagues like avant - gardists Alberto Burri and Piero Manzoni.
So voracious is the presence of the twelve
works in this focused retrospective of Al Loving's
