So
the whole purpose of church is simply to read the Bible?
These and other less central activities of the ministry of all periods are carried on by the pastoral director, but the work that lays the greatest claim to his time and thought is the care of a church, the administration of a community that is directed toward
the whole purpose of the Church, namely, the increase among men of the love of God and neighbor; for the Church is becoming the minister and its «minister» is its servant, directing it in its service.

church program or ministry, but rather abandoning the
whole sinking ship, and joining with community groups that already exist, not as a way to support and prop up «the
church,» but for the
purpose of being the
church.

church started to make more sense when I reread Erik Erikson's discussion
of identity as being tied to the discovery
of an ideology, a belief system, which gives one a transcendent fix on the meaning and
purpose for existence.
The RE syllabus is too often dictated by the needs
of public examinations, but even within this some fine work could be done, and the Faith communicated for what it is: essential knowledge, rich and deep, that opens wide the
whole of life's meaning and
purpose and sets it in the context
of centuries
of God's revelation and 2,000 years
of Church history that is thrilling to discover.
Pope Francis poses an appropriate challenge to liturgical traditionalists, to reflect on the
purpose of the liturgy and the
whole nature
of the
Church.
