In Johnson's freshman effort — which starred Mark Duplass (Your Sister's Sister), who on this new
film is the Executive Producer — the writer / director already demonstrated a strong understanding
of script
structure and a fine way with actors, but here he takes it to a
whole new level.
What I like in Frederick Wiseman movies is that he's
filming a
whole layer
of content, but he's adding a layer
of decisions about how to
structure the
film, where to cut, that doesn't relate to relaying dramatic information.
However, aside from a few jokes — which unfortunately don't always land where they're supposed to — and a handful
of enticing action sequences — especially the ones surrounding Flash and Wonder Woman — the
film, as a
whole, feels simplistic in
structure and lazy in execution, with the story lacking substance, ingenuity and enough heart to leave a lasting impression.
Margot Robbie provides equally great work in the lead, and the
film does a
whole lot to challenge the conventional
structure of a biopic.
