Should we identify here a contradiction that vitiates the Whiteheadian
system as a
whole, or is it the case that a more careful reading
of Whitehead's
theology is called for?
In my own teaching
of theology I find it best to use, rather than a single textbook with a single point
of view, a reader which presents several angles
of interpretation on specifics and on the
whole because it forces students confronting a plurality
of systems to decide for themselves what the Scriptures say.
This initially occurs in Descartes and Spinoza, but it becomes far more comprehensive in Schelling and Hegel, and so much so that the
whole body
of dogmatic
theology undergoes a metamorphosis into pure philosophical thinking in Hegel's
system.
It is my hope that this volume will help to «bridge the gap» between the professional philosophers and theologians and the many other persons who are looking for a basic familiarity with process
theology but who do not have the time to struggle with the complexities
of the process
system as a
whole.
