Overcoming anxiety about autism may be part of the answer in combating the rise in
whooping cough cases in California.
The Vermont Health Department says the number
of whooping cough cases in the state has dropped in half since a vaccination and public information campaign was launched in December.
The researchers concluded the rise in
whooping cough cases represents «the end - of - honeymoon» — a predictable consequence of incomplete vaccination coverage of infants combined with effective, but imperfect, vaccines.
The research found significant overlaps of areas with high numbers
of whooping cough cases and areas where more parents had sought legal exemptions to opt out vaccinating their children.
Despite high levels of vaccine coverage, the U.S. and other countries have experienced an increase in
whooping cough cases in the years following the switch to the new vaccine.
A resurgence in
whooping cough cases in the U.S. is likely due to incomplete vaccine coverage in the past combined with waning protection from the vaccine, according to a new study published in the March 28 issue of Science Translational Medicine.
They found no link between the number of
whooping cough cases and mortality from other infectious diseases.
About 80 per cent of the 2012
whooping cough cases in Australia studied by the team were caused by pertactin - free strains.
«One of the reasons we are seeing a steady increase in
whooping cough cases is because immunity in our vaccines goes down some as we get older,» says Dr. Christopher Ohl, infectious disease expert at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Recent years have seen a surge of
whooping cough cases, peaking in 2012 with nearly 50,000 cases reported to the CDC.
