In a night free of upsets, some of my own favorite outcomes were entirely expected, whether it was «Call Me by Your Name» earning its screenwriter, 89 - year - old industry veteran James Ivory, his long - overdue first Oscar, or Mark Bridges
winning costume design for his astute work on «Phantom Thread» (plus a jet ski for giving the night's shortest speech).

win his third Academy Award the same year for his work on The Last Emperor, and Anthony Powell, a three - time winner of the
costume design Oscar.
Bridges, who also
won the Oscar for
costume design, evidently had no use for the bright green Kawasaki, as he has now donated it to the Motion Picture Television Fund so it can be given away in a raffle on Omaze.com.
Those
wins were mainly for technical «below - the - line» achievements — including best
costume design, hair and make - up and production
design.
Lady Bird is fighting some Oscar history here, as movies without any nominations in the so - called «tech» categories (your cinematography, your production and
