The main feature of
the wirehaired Dachshund is the scruffy, short beard they display, and wirehaired dogs also come in the same colors as smooth coated Dachshunds.
My main breed is English Cocker spaniels, but I also had an interest in a mini
Wirehaired Dachshund, so I volunteered to foster for DRNA (Dachshund Rescue of America).
It has been reported in multiple dog breeds including Basset Hound [1 — 3], Beagle [4 — 6], Miniature
Wirehaired Dachshund (MWHD)[7, 8], Miniature and Standard Poodle [1, 9], Pointer [10], and Welsh Corgi [4].
After careful consideration, the Kennel Club Board approved a recommendation from their Dog Health Group that the progeny of any Dachshund from two Miniature
Wirehaired Dachshund parents, registered as a different coat type to their parents, must have a coat - type DNA test as a condition of registration, and will be endorsed by the Kennel Club (progeny not eligible for registration).
While a dachshund of any coat type can in theory inherit the recessive gene needed to produce a beard from both parents, it is in
the wirehaired dachshund line that beards pop up like clockwork.
However in the Basset Hound, Beagle and Miniature
Wirehaired Dachshund the same dodecamer repeat has been identified as causative in all three breeds [6, 8].
More recently, the molecular basis for autosomal recessive progressive myoclonic epilepsy (Lafora disease) in the miniature
wirehaired dachshund has been identified 34.
Some other breeds that have wirehaired coats include
the Wirehaired dachshund, the Scottish deerhound and the German wirehaired pointer.
