Would Etihad allow one to book
those with ANA miles?
It's an incredible price in terms of miles, but the problem will be the fuel surcharges that add up
with ANA.
The pitfall
with ANA is the taxes, fees and fuel surcharges it places on some partner flights.
Below is a list of airlines you can book
with ANA Mileage Club miles and where you can check for award space.
With ANA you can book Star Alliance flights like those on ANA or Thai Airways which have good availability onward to New Zealand, for just 120,000 miles roundtrip using any ANA partner, or 105,000 — 120,000 miles roundtrip using ANA's own flights.
They have partnerships
with ANA and Etihad and are also hoping to join one of the big alliances in the future (read here).
Business class is where it is at
with ANA.
With ANA, you calculate the cost based on the total mileage.
I was traveling with a group of travel media, and during our interviews
with ANA executives on Tuesday, we were assured that these were «teething issues» that fell within the band of normalcy for any new aircraft.
As an example, if you were to book a Turkish Airlines flight from JFK to IST (Istanbul)
with ANA, you'd pay about $ 340 in fuel surcharges.
If you're not familiar
with ANA they are one of my favorite airlines because they offer such great redemption rates (often with little fees) and are a partner of American Express Membership Rewards.
The new rate is tied
with ANA's roundtrip rate and just 8,000 more than Korean Air (although the fees are probably much lower when flying on Brussels).
As much as I hate fuel surcharges — and I really, really hate fuel surcharges — I would rather fly
with ANA.

with ANA miles, so check if you'd be better off booking now rather than later.
Since United does not fly to South Africa, you'll have to pay fuel surcharges if you want to get there
with ANA miles.
The important thing to remember with booking partners
with ANA is that you'll need to book a roundtrip ticket and that you'll have to pay some fuel surcharges.
Although you have to book roundtrip fares
with ANA, they offer ridiculously low redemption rates for getting to South Africa with miles and points at only 104,000 miles roundtrip!

In addition to being a SkyTeam member, Garuda is a partner
with ANA, Jet Airways and Etihad Airways.
For example, if you were able to book a off - season award
with ANA you'd be paying HALF of the miles needed for a roundtrip business class to Tokyo when compared to United!
You could book the same United flight to Europe
with ANA miles instead of United miles and end up saving over 20,000 miles!
Still, you can get away with little to no surcharges when booking certain airlines
with ANA and Aeroplan (which both allow stopovers), so I think American Express offers more lucrative redemption possibilities for Star Alliance partners.
1 round trip in business class to Africa or the Middle East
with ANA and you'd have about 75,000 points left over!

And while you're restricted to roundtrips
with ANA, you can book single segments with Aeroplan.
That's a considerable amount of miles considering that you could book a roundtrip to Europe
with ANA for only 88,000 miles.
For example, one very popular sweet spot is using 120,000 Virgin Atlantic miles for a roundtrip first class ticket to Japan
with ANA and only about $ 180 in fees.
Only a couple of other airlines like Korean Air, JAL, etc., can compete
with ANA's ridiculously low rates to Europe.
But I've never flown ANA, so all my interactions
with ANA customer service were on the ground.
With ANA it only costs 88,000 miles plus $ 183.70 in fees to fly business class from North America to Europe when flying on United.
I called in just to make sure that this was a valid booking and didn't get a 100 % yes — it was more like, «we are pretty sure you can do that but the only way we can tell you for sure is if you transfer miles to ANA...» Thus, while this route should work according to the rules above, I'd always try to double check
with ANA before planning on such a booking.
When you book directly
with ANA you are subject to different rules.
Booking ANA flights
with ANA miles is a superb way to get to Tokyo because the hard product of ANA is one of the best and the fees are actually pretty reasonable.
Because you'll actually book your award
with ANA, I recommend using this website to search, too.
A separate partner award chart applies when you travel on Star Alliance members, which you can mix with each other and
with ANA.
One last thing before you start searching: make sure you are familiar
with the ANA Mileage Club routing rules.
Using ANA to book ANA plus Asian airline partner airlines to get to Thailand is another option, although it is more expensive than flying
with ANA.
As an example, that UA7937 will say in small letters «operated by ANA» which means you should check - in
with ANA.
If you've ever shopped around for hotels in major cities in Japan, you've probably notices that some IHG hotels are co-branded
with ANA.
It's termed a codeshare since United shares its code (UA)
with ANA on that flight.
If you do a lot of flying
with ANA and / or stay at ANA co-branded IHG hotels, there might be some opportunity for value right there that you can jump on.
This credit card is not an attractive option to many people just looking to build up a mileage balance
with ANA to book flights.
Unfortunately, the fees can be quite high when flying
with ANA (over $ 500) as seen below.
My preferred method of getting to New Zealand would be to book a roundtrip
with ANA miles on United Airlines since they don't pass on fuel surcharges and your total fees would be minimal.
Availability is generally pretty decent
with ANA to BKK; however, you'll need to plan in advance.
Thus, while getting to New Zealand via United
with ANA miles would be terrific, I definitely recommend expanding your searches to routings via Australia and Asia that involve other partners.
The total fees at about $ 465 for a roundtrip is a little high, but you can't forget that you're getting an awesome redemption rate of 120,000 for your roundtrip, or if you book
with ANA's own metal, just 105,000!
On a round - trip flight with United, you'd spend 60,000 miles to travel in economy, but
with ANA you'd save an additional 10,000 miles for the same trip!
ANA is a transfer partner of American Express and Starwood's Starpoints convert to ANA miles as well (both convert at a 1:1 ratio) so there are ample opportunities for anyone wishing to build up a balance of miles
with ANA.
